PSA, shakedown edition

In this week’s edition of Something Interesting Happened, someone attempted to shake me down via email.

The message claimed I’d downloaded a virus while visiting their porn site, and the blackmailer had

1) hacked my computer’s video feed

2) recorded me fapping

3) recorded the specific porn I’d been fapping it to

4) demanded I go to their bitcoin wallet address for more instructions and

5) informed me that the email itself had a hidden tracking device, so the blackmailer would know when I opened it. They gave me four days to respond before unleashing a double-screen cinema of me and my porn of choice onto everyone in my email address book. Especially my employer.

Which? LOLOLOL. Without going into detail, there is 0% chance this story is true. But if it worked out that I couldn’t LOL about this because I couldn’t disprove any part of it? Holy shit, that’s a pretty scary threat.

As it turns out, two other people I know have gotten this email, but theirs included one of their old passwords in the subject heading. They thought the passwords were from one of those major data breeches. So heads up that this is going around. Both my friends alerted the FBI.

PS: Was going to lighten this post up with some funny fapping gifs, but after 2 minutes of searching, I feel like I should exit the internet for the rest of the day.

PPS: If this was a real thing, can you imagine your facebook feed when people didn’t pay up?

PPPS: I have been watching the presumed blackmailer/bot return to this page every few days. Hiyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeee!

  1. This happened to my husband and he came home and we both LOLed. We are not into porn for a variety of reasons so it was obviously an immediate scam. Can you imagine how many terrified people have paid up?! So insane.

  2. I will never know if I got this email because I delete most things that smell like spam without opening them. Oh well.

Related though, I just got one of those new Echo Spots that I use as my clock, my alarm and other things. It comes with a camera, so I could theoretically do video calls with someone else who has one. But I also have become suspicious of it. Like when people say Alexa is always listening, is my Dot always…watching? Like could video of my marital conjugal relations suddenly appear on the internet under the category of MOST BORING SEX TAPE EVER? News at 2am.
