Links and New Baby and Weird Ramblings04 Feb 2010 10:28 am

*I was reading this article about sexual innuendo in the Bible.  It claims that the word “testify” is from the Latin “testis”, which apparently means both “witness” and “testes”.  And, get this!  When you would testify in old times, you would do so by swearing an oath while grabbing the testicle of another.  LOL Old Times!  Although I must admit that if someone grabbed me by the balls and swore something, I’d be inclined to believe them.

*I’ve been seriously considering making a baby book for my youngest kid that is comprised entirely of LOLbabies.  Like LOLcats, only featuring my daughter in candid shots, with poor spelling (LOLbabehz! ), and lots of invisible fight scene captions. There are clearly a lot of good reasons not to do this, but I keep thinking about how funny those ’70′s pictures my mom took of me are, with the powder blue tuxedo ruffle shirt, bowl hair cut and collars that tipped out at my shoulders.  How could I not treat my child to the same type experience?  Plus, as embarrassing as LOLbabehz might be, it’s not like I’m doing something really cruel like giving her a mullet.

*So if you are still here, you must be bored, and so I’m hoping you will take a moment to advise me on something if you have knowledge.  Anybody out there quit their career and start a new business?  If so, any advice to impart?  Why did you do it and how did it turn out?  Good or bad, and also feel free to email if you don’t want it splayed across comments.  What do you need to know to give up a job and start something new?

Quit my job as a corp exec and started my own consulting firm. For the most part it has been awesome. My firm actually consults to start ups and women owned businesses. Id be happy to answer any questions or provide information. Just shoot me an email.

I started my own business after I was laid off, and couldn’t find another job. Someone suggested to me that my “hobby” could actually be a viable business, so I gave it a shot. I don’t make much, but I love what I do, I get to work from home, and there was no panicking over affordable child care when my third child was born.

Anyway I do art pieces for kids and name street sign photography. Everything is still a work in progress, from finding frame wholesalers to building my own website. I’m sure there’s a million things I could be doing better, but I’m proud that I’m doing it on my own.

I get slightly busier every month, which is tough for me… I keep expecting to be wildly successful immediately, and it doesn’t work that way. I did an art show last year, sold a few works, handed out about 100 cards… and got no new business from it. That was really discouraging.

It helps that the hubs thinks I’m wonderfully talented and is behind me all the way. ;) He was more excited than I was when I got my first commission.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I am hoping your new business is a line of LOLbabehz board books for ages 0-3. I WILL BUY THEM ALL.

    I like the LOLbabehz idea!
No- I’ve been at the same place for 13 years. I have considered leaving just to be at home, but then I feel lazy

I have to defend the mullets. I just had my girl’s bullet (baby mullet) which she has had since birth chopped off earlier this week and I miss it dearly.

And your idea is brill-I LOVE looking through my shotty old baby book, love the old pics of me and my sibs, all chubby and decked out in redonkulous get-ups. She may not appreciate it for years but some day, it will be treasured.

I am on a mission to follow my favs on Twitter, so am actually on my computer (how lame, I know) instead of my Droid (love it!) to browse your WHOLE PAGE to find the Twitter link only to discover that you DON’T twitter. Which totally bums me out. I would love to hang with you on the Twit. Er.

Also? Trying new pain meds. Can you tell? Did you know that typing “discover” while on new pain meds is hella hard?*

*I used hella for you. Because I lurves you.
